Verified Impact launches free online knowledge series for Southern Africa's tourism industry
Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword in tourism—it's becoming an essential part of doing business. As travellers become more conscious of their environmental impact, lodges, hotels, tour operators and travel businesses are under increasing pressure to understand, measure and communicate their sustainability efforts with confidence.

To help the industry take meaningful action, Verified Impact has launched a free online Knowledge Series, running from July to November 2026, designed to help tourism businesses understand what it really takes to measure a carbon footprint and reduce their environmental impact.
Moving Beyond Greenwashing
One of the biggest challenges facing the tourism industry today is separating genuine sustainability from marketing hype.
Verified Impact is a carbon footprint measurement and benchmarking programme developed specifically for eco-lodges and boutique tourism properties across Southern Africa. Unlike many generic calculators that rely on assumptions, the programme is built on real operational data collected directly from participating properties, providing accurate and transparent carbon measurements.
The initiative forms part of the kimkim Climate Action Plan pilot, delivered in partnership with the Wilderness Leadership School, ETC Africa, and The Eco Travel Boutique.
Together, the partners are currently working with around 25 tourism properties across Southern Africa, helping them accurately measure their carbon footprint, benchmark their performance against industry best practice, identify practical ways to reduce emissions, and communicate their sustainability journey honestly with guests and travel partners.

Why Carbon Literacy Matters
Today's travellers are asking more questions than ever before.
How sustainable is the lodge they're staying at?
What impact does their holiday have on the environment?
Can the business provide evidence to support its environmental claims?
According to Duncan Pritchard, Carbon Footprint and Greenhouse Gas expert at ETC Africa and programme lead for Verified Impact, understanding carbon emissions is quickly becoming as important as customer service or guest safety.
"Travellers are asking harder questions about the footprint of their trip. Agents and buyers are building carbon and sustainability credentials into how they choose who to work with. Properties that understand their own impact—and can communicate it with confidence—are the ones building long-term trust."

The challenge is that many tourism businesses simply don't know where to start.
Very few properties actively measure their carbon footprint, making it difficult to know whether sustainability initiatives are genuinely making a difference or simply sounding good in marketing material.
Learning From Real Data
Rather than focusing on theory, the Verified Impact Knowledge Series shares lessons gathered from years of measuring real tourism businesses across Southern Africa.
Participants will gain practical insights into:
Understanding carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emissions.
Collecting reliable operational data.
Identifying opportunities to reduce emissions.
Avoiding common mistakes in sustainability reporting.
Communicating climate action authentically without greenwashing.
Understanding what international travel buyers are now expecting.
Each online session runs for approximately one hour and is designed to encourage discussion, allowing participants to ask questions and learn directly from industry experts and fellow tourism professionals.
Whether you're a lodge owner, safari operator, marketing manager, guide, travel consultant or tourism entrepreneur, the sessions offer valuable knowledge that can be applied immediately.
