Green Corridors and EEPAN (Environmental Education and Public Awareness Network), in partnership with local conservation, environmental and environmental education organisations, invites the public to participate in the annual eThekwini Enviro Week from 1 to 8 June 2025.
This is a citywide initiative to connect communities with nature, and sustainability, and celebrate the beauty and diversity of our environment, and to showcase to Durbanites the great efforts that so many organisations are investing in our local environment.
The week features a variety of events that enable citizens to experience nature hands-on. There are more than 40 events planned, starting from Saturday May 31 throughout the week including beach clean-ups, storytelling sessions, film evenings, guided nature walks, food garden demonstrations, compost-making, educational displays, and community discussions and workshops.

Some highlights of the week include:
Beach Clean-ups: From Umdloti to Treasure Beach, multiple beach clean-ups will be hosted by Breathe Conservation, WESSA, and other partners throughout the week to tackle pollution and raise awareness about marine health. A beach and mangrove clean-up, for example, will take place at Beachwood Nature Reserve on Wednesday, 4 June – here’s an opportunity to learn about these critical coastal ecosystems.

Storytelling with Dr. Gcina Mhlophe on Sunday 1 June at 11am at The Green Hub. This will be a magical and inspiring morning of storytelling with renowned South African author and activist Dr. Gcina Mhlophe- her stories will focus on our deep-rooted connection to land and nature. This will be followed by free guided walks with Green Corridors’ nature guides.
Various organisations will host composting demonstrations, medicinal plant workshops, tree plantings, and interactive learning programmes at Inanda Wilderness Park and KwaMashu, aimed at building local capacity for sustainable food systems.
There are many guided nature walks in Burman Bush, Monteseel-,Hillcrest-, Everton- Conservancies, including a night walk in Crestholme Conservancy and a Snare Walk in Ntende Conservancy. Self-proclaimed "free range environmental educator” and passionate insect-and-creature-lover Andre Steenkamp, will conduct walks titled “The Sense of Wonder” in green spaces across the city.

“This is a week for everyone – families, schools, civic organisations and businesses,” says Andiswa Dlamini, from Green Corridors. “Whether you're interested in cleaning up beaches or learning to grow food sustainably or getting outdoors, swimming, hiking or gardening, you’ll find something meaningful to be involved in.”
