Growing a Legacy: How a 17-Year-Old Girl Is Planting the Seeds of Change

By choosing to act today, one young girl hopes to create a greener tomorrow through Mia’s Roots. Meet Mia from Morningside, Durban as she shares first hand, her dream, her vision and the inspiring action she is taking to green the suburbs of Durban, and ultimately, spread her movement across South Africa.

What does it mean to leave a legacy? For some, it is about achievements, recognition or success. For me, it is about creating something that will continue to grow long after I have moved on. It is about making a difference that future generations can see, experience and benefit from. At just 17 years old, I am beginning that journey through an environmental initiative called Mia’s Roots, built around a vision I call Growing a Legacy.

Growing a Legacy is more than a tree-planting project. It is a commitment to protecting the environment, restoring natural spaces and encouraging people to take responsibility for the world we share. Based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, the initiative focuses on planting indigenous trees, supporting local ecosystems and contributing to a greener future for South Africa.

The idea behind Mia’s Roots is simple: small actions can create lasting change. A single tree may seem insignificant in the bigger picture, but every tree planted is an investment in the future. Indigenous trees are especially important because they belong naturally in our local environment and can help support the wildlife and ecosystems that depend on them. By planting these trees in areas that need them, the project hopes to contribute to the restoration of Durban’s natural spaces.

Another important part of the vision is replacing invasive plant species where appropriate and helping rebuild indigenous ecosystems. Protecting the environment is not only about planting something new; it is also about caring for what already exists and creating the conditions for nature to thrive again.

However, turning an idea into meaningful action requires more than passion. Growing a Legacy aims to raise funds through crowdfunding so that indigenous tree saplings can be purchased and planted in suitable locations. The long-term vision is to build relationships with potential partners and sponsors who share the goal of environmental restoration. Through collaboration, the initiative hopes to grow beyond one person and become something that communities can support together.

The project also connects with South Africa’s Presidential One Billion Trees campaign, reflecting the wider importance of tree planting and environmental awareness. By contributing to this broader vision, Mia’s Roots hopes to show that young people can take initiative and play a role in addressing environmental challenges.

Being 17 means that I am still learning, growing and discovering what I am capable of achieving. But I do not believe that age should determine whether someone can make a difference. Sometimes, all it takes is an idea, the courage to begin and the determination to keep going, even when the journey seems bigger than you are.

I want Mia’s Roots to be an example of what can happen when young people decide to turn their concerns into action. I hope it will encourage others to recognise that caring for the environment is not solely the responsibility of governments or large organisations. Individuals, families, schools, businesses and communities can all contribute in their own ways.

Ultimately, Growing a Legacy is about thinking beyond the present. The trees planted today may continue growing for decades, providing benefits to people and nature long into the future. That is what makes this vision so meaningful to me: the possibility of starting something now that others will continue to nurture later.

I’m only at the beginning of this journey, but I have a clear purpose. Through Mia’s Roots, I want to help create a greener future, from Durban to communities across South Africa, by restoring indigenous nature, growing awareness and inspiring people nationwide to take action.

I may be 17, but I believe a legacy does not have to wait until adulthood. Sometimes, it begins with one idea, one tree and one person willing to make a difference.
