Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse: A Gourmet Escape into the Heart of the Drakensberg

There are places in KwaZulu-Natal that you visit once and somehow never quite forget. The Kamberg Valley, tucked beneath the great Drakensberg mountains, is one of them.

I’ve visited Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse before, and what stayed with me wasn’t simply the food or the beautiful setting. It was the feeling of being somewhere where life slows down, the mountains take centre stage, and a walk outside can be just as rewarding as sitting down to a seriously good meal.

This is the kind of place where you arrive looking forward to dinner, but soon find yourself looking at the birds, listening to the river and wondering where the day has gone.

A Little Piece of the Berg

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse sits in the Kamberg Valley in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg, surrounded by rolling hills, mountain scenery and the wider Maloti-Drakensberg landscape. The property itself covers around 500 acres, with walking trails and natural spaces to explore.

And this is where the magic starts.

There is something special about the Berg. It doesn't need to shout for your attention. You can sit quietly with a coffee, look towards the mountains and watch the landscape change as clouds move across the peaks.

For someone who loves the outdoors, that's a pretty good way to spend a day.

The Farmhouse has also been part of the Poynton family's story for generations. Richard and Mouse Poynton eventually developed the family farm into Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, opening the lodge in 1998 after years spent learning about food and hospitality in South Africa and overseas.

Where Food Becomes Part of the Adventure

Let's be honest – you don't head to Cleopatra simply to sleep in the mountains.

The food is a major part of the experience.

Chef Richard Poynton and his team have built the Farmhouse around a gourmet country dining experience, with the menu changing according to the seasons and availability of ingredients. Produce from the gardens can make its way from garden to kitchen within minutes.

Dinner is a five-course affair, but what makes the experience memorable isn't simply the number of courses.

It's the theatre of it.

The ingredients, the presentation, the explanation of what's on the plate and the sheer enjoyment of sitting down to a proper meal all become part of the evening.

And then there's breakfast.

At KhakiBush, we're big believers that breakfast in the bush or mountains should be taken seriously. Cleopatra certainly seems to agree, with its farmhouse breakfasts forming another part of the culinary experience.

Wake Up, Grab the Binoculars

While the food may get much of the attention, there's another reason I think Cleopatra deserves a place on the radar of anyone who enjoys the outdoors – birding.

The location puts you right into a remarkably diverse mountain environment, and the surrounding area supports extensive birdlife alongside wildlife such as eland, reedbuck, oribi, jackal, serval and rooikat.

The property's executive cottages overlook wetlands, with views towards the mountain and river, and the lodge specifically highlights these areas as ideal for bird watching and simply sitting quietly.

And that's the thing about birding.

You don't always need to head off on a formal birding expedition.

Sometimes it's about slowing down enough to notice what's already around you.

A movement in the grass. A call from somewhere in the trees. A bird crossing the valley while you're standing with a cup of coffee.

Once you start paying attention, the landscape becomes much more interesting.

Get Outside and Explore

One of the things we love about destinations like this is that the accommodation is only part of the adventure.

The surrounding Kamberg and Drakensberg offer plenty to do, from hiking and scenic walks to trout fishing, cycling and exploring the surrounding mountains. Highmoor Nature Reserve is close by, while Giant's Castle and the famous Drakensberg rock art sites are also within reach.

For those who enjoy history and conservation, the San rock art is particularly special.

Some Drakensberg rock art dates back thousands of years, giving visitors a glimpse into a landscape that has been important to people for generations long before we arrived with our hiking boots, cameras and GPS apps.

That's another reason I love travelling through Africa.

The landscape isn't just scenery.

There are stories everywhere.

A Place to Slow Down

Modern life has become incredibly noisy.

Phones buzz, emails arrive, social media never sleeps and we're constantly moving from one thing to the next.

Then you drive into somewhere like the Kamberg Valley.

Suddenly the mountains are bigger than the screen in your hand.

The sound of water becomes more interesting than a notification.

And sitting around a fire or enjoying dinner becomes something you actually experience rather than photograph for everyone else.

There's something special about that.

Cleopatra describes itself as a restful refuge and gourmet getaway, and having visited, I understand why. The combination of mountain scenery, country hospitality, good food and access to the outdoors creates an experience that feels quite removed from everyday life.

The Drakensberg Is the Real Attraction

For me, the real beauty of Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is that it doesn't need to compete with its surroundings.

The Drakensberg does the heavy lifting.

The mountains, rivers, grasslands, wildlife and birdlife create the backdrop, while the Farmhouse gives you a comfortable base from which to experience it.

You can spend the morning walking, the afternoon watching birds or simply relaxing, and then finish the day around a beautifully prepared dinner.

That's a pretty good combination.

And if you're coming from Durban, it's also a reminder that some of South Africa's best adventures aren't necessarily thousands of kilometres away. The Farmhouse notes that it's roughly a two-hour drive from Durban, making it an accessible escape into the mountains.

Why Places Like This Matter

At KhakiBush, we believe responsible tourism is about more than simply ticking destinations off a list.

It's about connecting people with wild places.

When we visit a mountain lodge, game reserve, conservation project or small rural tourism operation, we're helping create value around the landscapes that make Africa so special.

And when people fall in love with those landscapes, they are far more likely to care about protecting them.

That's why experiences such as birding, hiking, fishing and simply spending time outdoors matter.

They reconnect us with the natural world.

My Kind of Berg Escape

I’ve visited Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse before, and like many good African destinations, it's one of those places that sticks with you.

Maybe it's the mountains.

Maybe it's the food.

Maybe it's the birds calling from the gardens while you're enjoying breakfast.

Or perhaps it's simply that rare feeling of having nowhere else you need to be.

Few experiences compare to sitting somewhere beautiful, surrounded by nature, with a good meal ahead of you and the mountains stretching into the distance.

For me, that's the Drakensberg at its best.

And that's what makes Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse much more than a gourmet getaway.

It's a place to slow down, look up and rediscover the wild side of life.
