Hollywoodbets Rhino Ride 2026 - More Than Just a Ride

There are mountain bike events, and then there are weekends where the riding is almost beside the point. The Hollywoodbets Rhino Ride 2026 belongs firmly in the second category.

Set in the heart of Manyoni Private Game Reserve in Zululand, this is mountain biking with a difference. You are not simply riding through a beautiful piece of South Africa. You are riding through genuine Big Five territory, surrounded by wilderness, wildlife and the people who work every day to protect it. That is what makes Rhino Ride so special, and from the moment you arrive there is a feeling that this is going to be a very different kind of weekend.

Friday evening sets the tone. Riders and guests gather around the lodge for good food, a few drinks and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to strike up conversation with complete strangers. Before long you are swapping stories with people you only just met, and already making plans for the weekend ahead. There is plenty of food, plenty of laughter and, of course, plenty of talk about the rides to come.

The food deserves a special mention. The meals throughout the weekend were phenomenal, the kind that make you look forward to sitting down almost as much as getting back on the bike. It sounds like a small detail until you experience it, and then you realise how much it adds to the weekend.

Saturday morning arrives early. Coffee is essential, and the team from Three Lads and a Toucan Coffee Roasters were on hand to make sure everyone was properly fuelled before heading out. Standing around with a good cup of coffee, watching riders arrive as the early morning light spreads over the reserve, it was hard to imagine a better place to start a ride.

Then it was time to ride.

I took on the 40 kilometre route on Saturday, and although the scenery is spectacular, this is not a ride where you simply cruise around admiring the view. The trails are challenging and varied, at times properly demanding, with the terrain a constant reminder that you are riding through a wild environment rather than a purpose built cycling venue. That is part of the magic. There is something special about riding a mountain bike through a Big Five game reserve. You are always looking ahead, but you are also looking around, because every bend brings the chance of seeing something you would never encounter on an ordinary weekend ride.

And while the riding is obviously a huge part of Rhino Ride, it is the people who really make the weekend. You meet riders from all walks of life, some there for the challenge, some for the adventure, and plenty simply there because they love being outdoors and want to experience something different. By the end of the weekend, many of those people no longer feel like strangers. That sense of community is exactly what the event is about.

But underneath all the riding, food and laughter is something far more important: conservation.

The Hollywoodbets Rhino Ride is organised in support of the Zululand Conservation Trust, with the event helping fund vital work including anti poaching operations and the protection of wildlife. What makes that message so powerful is that conservation is not just something written on a banner around the event village. Over the course of the weekend, you get the chance to see what that work actually means.

Some friends of mine had bought a rhino dehorning experience at auction during the previous Rhino Ride. On Saturday afternoon they headed out with the rangers and watched the entire process, from the darting of the rhino through to the dehorning itself. When they returned, they were still trying to put the experience into words. They described it as absolutely phenomenal, but more than anything, they came back with an even greater appreciation for the people working on the ground to protect these animals.

Others headed out to the rhino orphanage on Sunday morning and came back just as moved by what they had seen. These are experiences that stay with you. It is one thing to know that money raised by an event goes towards conservation. It is another thing entirely to meet the people involved, see the work being done and understand just how much effort goes into protecting South Africa's wildlife.

And then, somehow, you return to the event village and the party continues. Saturday afternoon becomes Saturday evening, the food comes out again, the music gets going and the big screen becomes the centre of attention as everyone settles in to watch the Springboks take on New Zealand. There is a lot of cheering, plenty of laughter and the inevitable conversation with people you had never met twenty four hours earlier.

That is the beauty of Rhino Ride. It manages to bring together two things that might seem very different: serious conservation work, and a genuinely good weekend away with friends.

Sunday morning brings one final ride, the 30 kilometre scenic route. Scenic it certainly is, although there is enough climbing, technical riding and rough terrain to make sure you earn the views. By the time you roll back into the event village, there is that familiar combination of tired legs and a big smile. Another coffee. More food. More stories about the weekend. And slowly, people start packing up and heading home.

What stays with you is not really how fast you rode or how many kilometres you covered. It is the people you met. The trails you rode. The food you shared. The wildlife and wilderness around you. And the knowledge that, while you were having an incredible weekend on your bike, you were also helping support something much bigger.

The Hollywoodbets Rhino Ride is often described as a weekend of cycling, wildlife and conservation in the heart of Big Five country. After spending a weekend there, that description feels almost too simple. Because Rhino Ride is not just about riding. It is about experiencing the bush, meeting good people, having a genuinely good time and, somewhere along the way, being reminded why places like Manyoni are worth protecting.

Pedal. Protect. Preserve.

That is what Rhino Ride is really about.
