Running with Purpose - A Weekend at the Hollywoodbets Rhino Run

There are trail runs, and then there are experiences that stay with you long after the finish line. The Hollywoodbets Rhino Run, held in the breathtaking Manyoni Private Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, is firmly in the latter category.
Representing KhakiBush Magazine, I had the privilege of taking part in this year's event, tackling the 21 km trail on Saturday followed by the 15 km route on Sunday. While the trails were spectacular, it quickly became clear that this weekend was about far more than kilometres covered or finishing times. It was about conservation, community and experiencing one of South Africa's premier private game reserves in a truly unique way.

The tone for the weekend was set from the moment we arrived at Bayete Zulu Lodge, where runners were warmly welcomed by Karen and her incredible team. Registration was seamless, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly, and there was a genuine sense that everyone—from first-time trail runners to seasoned veterans—had come together for something bigger than a race.
I opted to camp for the weekend, and it turned out to be a great way to soak up the whole experience. The campsite was well set up, and the hot showers after a long day on the trail were more than welcome. There's something about swapping stories around camp in the evening, still dusty from the day's run, that adds to the whole adventure.

Saturday's run delivered one of those moments that no ordinary trail event could ever offer.
Midway through the route, we were asked to stop by the reserve's rangers as a herd of buffalo had wandered onto the trail ahead. Rather than frustration, the delay became one of the highlights of the weekend. The rangers launched a drone to monitor the herd from above, sharing the live footage with curious runners as everyone chatted, laughed and soaked up the experience. Once the buffalo had moved off naturally, we were given the all-clear and continued our run.

It was a reminder that, in Manyoni, we are merely visitors. Nature dictates the pace.
Throughout the weekend we were treated to incredible wildlife sightings, including giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, nyala and plenty of warthog. Knowing that these animals roam freely just beyond the trail adds an unforgettable dimension to every kilometre.
Of course, the Hollywoodbets Rhino Run isn't just about running through beautiful scenery. Every entry helps support the vital conservation work of the Zululand Conservation Trust, whose efforts play an important role in protecting rhinos and preserving this remarkable wilderness.

One particularly special moment came during the evening's fundraising activities, where guests had the opportunity to bid for the naming rights of an orphaned rhino. The winning bid gave the young rhino the name Katie—a touching reminder that the weekend's impact extends far beyond the finish line.
Hollywoodbets, now the title sponsor of the Rhino Run after previously partnering with the Rhino Ride, certainly added to the festive atmosphere. The return of the much-loved Hollywood Brew and the lively beer garden quickly became a favourite gathering place after each day's racing, where runners swapped stories, celebrated personal achievements and simply enjoyed each other's company.
It wasn't only the social atmosphere that impressed.
The event was exceptionally well organised from start to finish. Karen and her entire organising team deserve enormous credit for delivering a world-class experience. The Manyoni rangers were professional, knowledgeable and passionate about both the reserve and its wildlife, while the physiotherapists from Kings Park Sports Medicine Centre were on hand throughout the weekend, helping tired legs recover after long days on the trails.
The hospitality at Bayete Zulu Lodge was equally memorable, and for those who preferred not to camp, comfortable accommodation and good food meant runners could relax and recharge between adventures either way. For many participants, the optional game drives offered yet another unforgettable experience, with sightings of lion, buffalo, giraffe and other iconic African wildlife adding to what was already an extraordinary weekend.
Perhaps what stood out most, however, was the camaraderie. Whether waiting patiently for buffalo to move off the trail, sharing a meal after the race or swapping stories around the campfire, there was an unmistakable sense that everyone was there for the same reason—to enjoy the outdoors while contributing to something genuinely meaningful. It's the kind of weekend where you leave with new friends and memories that last well beyond the trail.
The Hollywoodbets Rhino Run manages to strike a rare balance between adventure and purpose. It offers challenging trails, incredible wildlife encounters and first-class organisation, all while supporting one of South Africa's most important conservation initiatives.
As attention now turns to the Hollywoodbets Rhino Ride, taking place from 28–30 August 2026, the momentum behind these conservation-focused events continues to grow. Together, the Rhino Run and Rhino Ride raise vital funds for the Zululand Conservation Trust and its ongoing work to protect rhinos and conserve the incredible biodiversity of Manyoni Private Game Reserve.
While the 2027 Hollywoodbets Rhino Run dates are still to be announced, entries traditionally open early in the new year. If this year's event proved anything, it's that places are in high demand for good reason. If you're looking for more than just another trail race—if you're after an unforgettable weekend where every step helps make a difference—keep an eye on the Rhino Run & Rhino Ride social media pages and the Zululand Conservation Trust for the official announcement.
This is one event that deserves a place on every trail runner's bucket list.
