The Return of the Rangers: Winter School Holidays Gone Wild!

There’s something about the idea of a Mini Ranger that instantly makes sense.

It taps into that old-school kind of childhood fun: being outside, following tracks, asking questions, and feeling like the world is full of things to discover. It brings back a bit of the spirit of scouting, but in a way that feels current, exciting, and much more ... natural (dry pun intended). The De Hoop Mini Ranger Programme is bringing back the ranger experience for kids in a big way, with an exciting line-up of activities geared to deliver a fun, educational, and memorable outdoor experience for the little ones.

Running during the winter holidays, the programme is built as a three-night family getaway for children aged 6 to 11. At the centre of it is a simple but powerful idea: give kids the chance to step into nature properly, not just as spectators, but as active participants. That’s what makes the De Hoop Collection's new Mini Ranger Programme feel like such a strong school holiday idea. They’ll get to log animal sightings in their own booklet, join in on family nature quests, try tracking and spoor moulding, sit down for star stories and s’mores, and get involved in science experiments and games. There are also hands-on sessions with weather stations, sundials, and compasses, plus an Earth Age geology display and a scorpion hunt for our brave mini rangers.

A setup like this gives kids the chance to learn without feeling like they’re being taught. Tracking encourages patience and observation. Working with compasses and weather stations builds problem-solving and awareness. And that’s where the programme starts to offer something more than just a fun few days away. Even simply spending time outdoors, paying attention to what’s around them, helps children become more curious, more engaged, and a little more confident in themselves. These are small things, but the experiences and memories will live on with your child forever.

What’s also clever is that the programme doesn’t depend on perfect weather. If the rain rolls in, the energy doesn’t disappear with it. Indoor activities like biscuit making, chocolate making, and the science-based sessions keep the momentum going, which makes the whole thing feel like a well-thought-out experience, doesn't it?

Then there’s the setting. Talk about absolute scenes: De Hoop is well known as one of the most sought-after venues for families, weddings, and honeymoons, thanks to its spectacular views of the vlei and diverse birdlife. This gives the programme exactly the kind of backdrop it needs. The reserve adds a real sense of place to the experience, and the children get to explore it on a rugged Land Cruiser or a tractor-and-trailer ride. It gives the programme a sense of being properly connected to the surrounding nature, not just staged beside it. The whole experience becomes fun, exciting and memorable, kinda like the scouts back in the day.

There’s also something appealing about the fact that this doesn’t feel too polished or overcomplicated. It feels like a return to a kind of childhood experience many of us still remember: time outside, a bit of dirt, and the freedom to be curious.

And of course, there’s a proper ranger ending to it all. Kids who complete the programme receive an official De Hoop Mini Ranger cap and badge, which is exactly the kind of thing that makes the experience feel complete. The De Hoop Mini Ranger Programme runs on 3–6 July 2026 and 16–19 July 2026, with packages starting from R8 900 for a three-night family stay in a six-sleeper De Hoop Village unit, including accommodation and Mini Ranger activities. For families looking for a winter break that gives kids something fun, practical, and a little different, this feels like a very good place to start.
