Why Is Government So Stubborn About Starlink?

There’s something I just don't understand.
We live in a country where millions of people still struggle with reliable internet, particularly in rural and remote areas.
Yet above our heads, satellites are flying over Africa every day, capable of connecting places where fibre and cellphone towers simply can't reach.
So I have to ask:
Why is our government so stubborn about allowing Starlink to trade in South Africa?
I'm not talking about getting faster Wi-Fi at home.
I'm talking about rural schools, conservation, anti-poaching, tourism, small businesses and safety in remote areas.
Think About Rural Education

Take a rural school miles from the nearest town.
A decent internet connection could give teachers and learners access to educational resources, online courses, research and opportunities that children in cities often take for granted.
Connectivity won't magically fix education.
But it can open doors.
And surely giving rural children access to the same digital world as everyone else should be something worth encouraging.
Then Think About Conservation
Now take that connectivity into the bush.
Our conservation teams are increasingly using technology to monitor wildlife, track threats and improve communication.
Anti-poaching operations need information to move quickly.
Rangers need communication.
Remote reserves need connectivity.
Technology doesn't replace boots on the ground, but it can give those boots better information.
And when you're protecting rhino, elephant and other wildlife across enormous landscapes, communication matters.

And What About the Overlander?
Anyone who has travelled deep into Africa knows the problem.
Eventually, the cellphone signal disappears.
That's part of the adventure—until something goes wrong.
A reliable satellite connection could provide another layer of safety for people travelling remote roads, allowing them to communicate, access weather information, contact assistance or stay connected with family.
It shouldn't replace proper emergency equipment or satellite communication devices, but it could certainly become another useful tool.
So What's the Problem?
Yes, there are regulations.
Yes, there are licensing requirements.
Yes, South Africa has every right to regulate its telecommunications industry.
But at what point does regulation become a barrier to progress?
Why are we making it so difficult for a technology that could help connect rural South Africans, support conservation and improve safety in remote areas?
We should be asking how we can make this technology work for South Africa—not simply how we can stop it.
Because while we're arguing about licences and regulations, the rest of the world isn't standing still.
Africa needs connectivity.
Our rural schools need it.
Our conservationists need it.
Our remote tourism industry needs it.
And those of us who love exploring the places where cellphone towers don't exist would certainly welcome it.

For me, this isn't about Starlink versus the government.
It's about asking a simple question:
If technology can help educate our children, protect our wildlife and make remote Africa safer, why wouldn't we want it?
That's the question I'd like someone in government to answer.
And preferably before I drive another 50 kilometres down a dirt road looking for one bar of cellphone signal.
